Nestled within the native forest of South Australia’s Upper Sturt, the pavilion is conceived as a quiet retreat embedded within its rugged landscape. The building is carefully positioned to sit lightly among towering gums and dense understory, allowing the natural setting to remain the dominant presence. From its elevated vantage point, the pavilion opens to expansive valley views in two directions, offering ever-changing perspectives shaped by light, weather, and seasonal shifts.
The design responds directly to the site’s extreme climatic conditions, balancing exposure and protection through considered orientation and form. Deep overhangs, operable openings, and a robust envelope provide shelter from intense summer heat while allowing winter light to flood the interior. The pavilion’s layout encourages cross-ventilation and passive cooling, reducing reliance on mechanical systems and enhancing comfort throughout the year.
Given the bushfire-prone context of Upper Sturt, the project carefully addresses stringent bushfire regulations without compromising architectural intent. Non-combustible materials, protected openings, and defensible zones are integrated seamlessly into the design, ensuring resilience and safety. These measures are complemented by thoughtful landscaping strategies that respect existing vegetation while managing fuel loads around the structure.
Internally, the pavilion is defined by a simple, flexible plan that frames the surrounding landscape as its primary feature. Large glazed openings draw the valleys into the living spaces, creating a strong visual and emotional connection to the environment. The result is a delicate yet robust architectural response - one that celebrates place, respects ecological constraints, and offers a serene experience within the dramatic forested terrain.
